After many months of drought at the box office, there is a respite. The growing trend towards southern cinema across India has not only affected Bollywood. Movies in other regional languages like Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Bengali are also giving lukewarm responses from moviegoers.

Moreover, very few OTT players like SonyLIV, ZEE5, and Amazon Prime Video are showing interest in acquiring the streaming rights of these films, which is affecting producers’ ability to invest in new productions. Hits from regional language films have been quite scattered so far and even regular releases have not resumed as before Covid-19, at least in Marathi and Bengali. Ammi Virk starrer Punjabi’s latest big grosser ‘Saukan Saukne’ collected Rs. 22 crores within the fortnight of its opening in May in markets including Punjab and Delhi NCR, according to Box Office India Business website. Marathi cinema has also performed decently with titles like ‘Chandramukhi’, ‘Sher Shivraj’, and ‘Dagdi Chaal 2’ but less hits.
