Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland lead The 150th British Open after third rounds
Rory McIlroy 150th Open : Rory McIlroy said he was doing his best to stay in his “own little world” at the 150th Open as crowds flocked to watch him fire a round of 66 to share a four-shot lead on the final day at Victor Hovland St. Andrews.
“The support I’ve had this week has been absolutely incredible,” McIlroy said. “I appreciate it and I feel it there. But at the same time, I’m trying my hardest to stay in my own little world because that’s the best way to get the best out of me.
The Northern Irishman is well aware of his eight-year wait for a major championship since his Open victory at Royal Liverpool in 2014 and said the distraction on the Old Course has proved the best preparation for the 33-year-old. He revealed that he got quite emotional watching Ireland sensationally beat the All Blacks in the morning.
“There’s no rugby to watch tomorrow morning, unfortunately,” McIlroy told that morning he watched two rugby matches, which was great. Actually, he got a bit emotional when Ireland won. It was an amazing achievement for them.
It remains to be seen whether he will be as emotional when he arrives at the 18th fair on Sunday. Amid speculation about his last time playing competitively at St. Andrews this year, Tiger Woods is hitting the historic last fairway on Friday.
After three birdies on the blemish-free front nine, McIlroy’s round caught fire at the 10th. He found a bunker guarding the front of the 10th green – the first time he’s found the sand this week – but sensibly holed out for eagle two and raised the biggest cheer of the tournament so far.
McIlroy continued to trade shots with Hovland and the two ended up overshooting the green on 17, with McIlroy doing well only to make bogey after getting tight to the wall on the fairway.
